The Finnish Parliament is gearing up for what is expected to be a close vote on a proposal to extend marriage rights to same-sex couples. As the vote will be tomorrow, I thought now would be the perfect time to bring back this photoshoot that photographer Jirina Alanko and I shot in 2013.

With this series of photos, titled Annalan varjon alla, Jirina and I wanted to highlight queer visibility in the vintage scene. Drawing inspiration from Finnish films of the 1930s, our attempt was reimagine the heterocenteric and heterosexist history of romantic imagery by depicting two women enamoured with each other.

Random snaps for Valentine’s Day, 2014.

Jirina Alanko shot these photographs on the courtyard and staircase of my apartment in Helsinki. The Jugendstil house was built in 1910.

I’m wearing a dreamy forest green velvet Claudette dress by Collectif, paired with a 1930s reversible cape; black velvet on one side, silver glitter on the other, and a 30s bracelet.

Welcome to 21st Century Flapper!
My name is Riikka and I hail from Helsinki, Finland. I'm a film researcher and a freelance journalist, a sartorial devotee of vintage fashion and endlessly fascinated by early 20th century visual culture. I write about film, fashion, design, architecture - and all things old and pretty.

Olen helsinkiläinen elokuvatutkija ja toimittaja, jolle 1900-luvun alkupuolen visuaalinen kulttuuri on todellinen intohimo. Blogi sivuaa kiinnostuksen kohteitani 1920- ja 1930-luvun elokuvista aina ajan muotiin ja designiin asti.
