The Finnish Parliament is gearing up for what is expected to be a close vote on a proposal to extend marriage rights to same-sex couples. As the vote will be tomorrow, I thought now would be the perfect time to bring back this photoshoot that photographer Jirina Alanko and I shot in 2013.

With this series of photos, titled Annalan varjon alla, Jirina and I wanted to highlight queer visibility in the vintage scene. Drawing inspiration from Finnish films of the 1930s, our attempt was reimagine the heterocenteric and heterosexist history of romantic imagery by depicting two women enamoured with each other.

You two are just so adorable. I have all my crossables crossed for the vote tomorrow. I wish we didn’t have to vote and rights were just there for everyone. ((((hugs)))

These photos are so strikingly beautiful. I love the sense of joy and soulful contentment on each of your faces in them. I shall keep my fingers firmly crossed that the vote goes in favour of same sex couples. It’s sad and staggering in a way that such things are still issues in this day and age. How I hope I future generations can look back on these years and wonder what on earth we were possibly thinking, the way we do now with things such as slavery and not permitting women to vote.

Thank you both for your support! I’m very happy to report back that the vote did indeed go in favour of equal marriage. It is still going to take several years for the law to be changed but thankfully things are finally going to change for the better.
